Summer Session 2 Begins

Well, I was lucky enough to have a whole weekend off before I had to return to school to start the second six week summer session. It was a nice brief break, and now I am here-sitting in class-in my home away from home. I'm excited to get this session rolling because the sooner it gets started, the sooner it concludes, and the sooner I can get into the kindergarten classroom to student teach.

Meaningful Lessons

Social Studies is a very important and necessary subject that students need to be exposed to in school. To make the lessons more meaningful, teachers should aim to bring social studies to life for their students. This can be done using a problem-centered constructivist approach in the classroom. It is important to plan authentic experiences for children to participate in. These experiences must be relevant to the lives of your students - they must be able to connect with them. Hands-on and minds-on lessons are required in order for students to get the most out of their time spent at school. Students must always be active participants in the activities that take place. It is also important to plan integrated lessons that include additional content areas. Learning social studies in combination with science or literacy for example demonstrates to students how all subjects relate to one another. It provides students with the opportunity to apply knowledge learned to real-life scenarios and it illustrates that social studies is a part of every day life. A meaningful, well-planned social studies lesson should ensure that students recognize and respect our diversified society and world. Lessons should guide students into becoming informed, intelligent citizens that can make decisions about what is best for our country and our neighbors.
